DO SOMETHING: THE PRE-ORDER WITH PURPOSE
DO SOMETHING:
THE PRE-ORDER WITH PURPOSE
The Street Parking program and community were designed from the very beginning to break down all barriers to fitness. Our aim has always been to provide a place and a program that is accessible no matter who you are. This program was made for those who can’t afford, don’t have access to, or don’t feel comfortable in a conventional or “box” gym. It was created for those who work odd hours, or perhaps two jobs. For those who are full time parents, or full time students. For those who have no fitness background, or those with years worth of experience. It has been built to provide high quality coaching and a social platform to motivate and support people from all walks of life - because to us fitness is not a luxury reserved for those with extra time and money.
Fitness is a necessity for everyone. It is foundational for overall mental and physical health. So - no matter where you live in the world - YOU can be a part of this family.
Right now there is a very important human rights/social justice movement taking place. Equality and access to education, health, recreation, jobs, and a better life for ALL is at the core of the Street Parking belief system.
We have previously voiced on several occasions and have a clear stance on the fact that black lives, black health, and black families matter. We are here to support and love the black (and all POC) members of the Street Parking Community - and aim to improve lives beyond our community as well.
Which is why we created the DO SOMETHING collection, as one way the Street Parking community together can take supportive action.
Family is at the heart of the Street Parking brand and the level where we believe the most important changes can be made. We invite you to join us in supporting the work of the National Black Child Development Institute, a non-partisan organization that impacts black families and children -- as all proceeds from the sales of the DO SOMETHING collection (along with an additional donation from Street Parking HQ) will benefit this organization and therefore larger community.
"With a specific and relentless focus on the strengths and needs of our communities, and a lens of cultural competence, NBCDI serves as a national resource agency providing programs, publications, advocacy and trainings related to early childhood care and education; health and wellness; literacy and family engagement.” - NCBDI @nbcdi_
So why “DO SOMETHING”?
Because our goal for each of YOU (the Street Parking Members) is that you DO SOMETHING, especially with regard to these vital social justice issues. We recognize that “something” might be different for everyone. It might be posting on your personal social media to show support and ally-ship. It might be teaching your kids, or reading new books for the education to help you understand. It might be donating, or committing to vote for new community leaders. Maybe it starts with simply listening. DO SOMETHING to leave this community, your home community, and this planet a little better - more equal - and more loving each day.
What does DO SOMETHING mean at Street Parking?
Listening, digesting, learning through books and podcasts from relevant speakers on the topics of social justice and anti-racism.
Continuing to engage with and listen to the black members within the SP community to identify tangible ways we can do better - to help make them feel more seen, heard, and loved here.
Taking the Chrissy King "Anti-Racism for Wellness Professionals" seminar as a staff and having team discussions about information or ideas that stood out for both personal and professional applications.
Having ongoing conversations as a team for long term planning, as well as ongoing review of SP practices, tools and language to better address diversity, inclusion and anti-racism efforts.
We are committed to continuing to learn and grow as a team and a community. Our hope is that we can come together during times like these to be a source of positivity, unity, and change.
Supporting and sharing voices within and outside of our community via social media posts/stories. We encourage all SP members to follow the staff for more personal connection and conversations on social media platforms!
What does DO SOMETHING mean to YOU?
“Showing up. I’m not going to be the guy at the forefront, but I have the power to show up and be accountable. I’m not always jumping on social media, but I have the ability to do something wherever I am. Something I learned from the Chrissy King seminar was the extent to which people make dumb remarks, and I’m going to be the person who says something and/or questions that behavior. I’ll also be the person who listens, shows empathy and shows love. We all have the power to show up and be the ambassador of change in some capacity. I’m going to be that person.” - Chris Guardado, SP Designer & Brand Manager
"For the past few months I've been taking inventory of my own biases and tendencies and trying to learn how I can be more inclusive, specifically in the work that I do as a coach, yoga instructor, and with the pregnant/postpartum population. I jumped on the opportunity to enroll in a 12 week Birthing Advocacy Doula Training. This training has forced me to acknowledge my responsibility to take action in advocating for marginalized communities. It's opened my eyes to how limiting or even harmful some of my words and actions can be. It's made me realize that while I'm proud of the work that I do, I have a long way to go in creating spaces and resources that are truly inclusive. This course has made it painfully clear to me that a large part of the work that I do isn't always relatable or accessible to, not only the BIPOC community, but also the LGBTQIA+ community as well. I'm learning so much about disparities and inequalities in the birth world and I want to do my part to change that in any way I can. I want Street Parking and the programs, tools, and resources that I help create within it to be accessible, relatable, effective, and inclusive of any human who might benefit from them. I know I've made mistakes and will continue to along the way but I'm open to being held accountable. I'm learning. I'm trying every day to DO SOMETHING in my own way."
- Carolina Stone, SP Mamas & Maintenance Coach
“DO SOMETHING means to take action and to be better. First look inward to identify where you can learn and grow that is the first “something” that needs to be done. From there you can move on to outer “somethings”. Find a way you can apply your voice, your effort, your resources to something you believe in. Find an area you can contribute to in some way. You can’t teach other people how to become a chef if you’ve never cooked a meal. Pick something positive you CAN do and then FOLLOW THROUGH… actually DO IT. And always remember to be kind in the process. Less negative talk and more positive action will get us all to where we want to be much faster.” - Nicole O’Neill, Social Media Manager
"Do Something starts with me. It means taking action to move myself and my community toward becoming better. If I want to affect change in the world around me, it starts with first making sure my own house is in order. This requires a persistent commitment, not just one act here and there. Just as you can't brush your teeth one time and never get a cavity or workout one time and be fit for life, you can't make one gesture and expect lasting results. When I start my day with a few moments of self-reflection, I am better equipped to take the right action throughout my day. This includes speaking up and it includes actively listening. It's okay for people to disagree. It's okay for people to hold different ideas. In fact, it is essential to respectfully meet differences of opinion head-on, to question them, and allow my own beliefs to be questioned. It is possible to do this constructively. Do Something means actively seeking out where I have been a participant, knowingly or unknowingly, in systems of inequality. It means educating myself through as many different sources as possible. It means humbly questioning my beliefs and the conflicting beliefs of others. It means giving everyone around me the benefit of the doubt while still holding them accountable and asking them to do the same for me. It means doing this consistently. In order to improve ourselves, our communities, and our longstanding institutions, we must listen, we must learn, we must love, and we must commit daily." - Jeb Stone, SP Head Coach
"Do Something means to take action, taking action looks different for everyone. For myself, I am learning about the social injustice that others face and making sure that I am not unknowingly perpetuating division amongst us. I have and will continue to do my best to always stand up for those who are faced with inequality and injustice. I will find a way to apply what I have learned and spend my time helping causes the can further equality for all. I will Do Something." - Rachael Durrance, SP Admin Manager
“It's taking responsibility for myself and for who and what I have responsibility for, starting in my home with my young boys. It's making sure that if I or we say we value someone or something that our actions, words, and daily behaviors align with showing that value. It's a daily commitment to kindness, love, respect and transparency even when it's messy. It's having hard conversations, un-learning and listening for ways to be pro-active in undoing systems that have created inequality and harmed others. It's being committed to these conversations and this process no matter how it might feel, how long it takes or how challenging it may be at times. In our community, it's looking for ways to increase inclusivity in our messages, communications and media platforms. It's continuing the mission of the program - this tool for empowering health and overall wellness - making sure that it is available to everyone, and that any barriers for participation or accessibility can be identified and improved. ”
- Kim McIntyre, SP Operations Manager
“It’s re-evaluating my core values, and thinking about how I want to be treated and treat others. Thinking about how do we do something that brings people together? It means learning we will always have differences but we can still work to discuss and gain understanding of the differences and stop attacking each other.”
- Kaitlin Hamilton, Apparel & Meet Ups Guru
"Do something. Say something. It does not have to be complicated or over the top. Although it may be hard to stand up for the right thing at times, we all have our own unique ways to do it. I have been raised to be kind to every single person that I come across. I only hope that kindness resonates with others and spreads like wildfire. I know it can be hard for others, but if they remember that all it takes is just ONE “small thing”, it can make a world of difference."
- Salvi Villanueva, SP Media
"Do Something to make a change. Do something to make the world a better place. We all come from different backgrounds and look different, but we are the same. I think it’s important to be kind and respectful. Be open to new ideas (even though it makes you uncomfortable). Know that it’s absolutely okay to make mistakes, but acknowledge them and most importantly learn from them. Be forgiving. Be loving - because it is the strongest thing we can share as humans."
- Akeiko Dela Cruz, SP Media/Apparel
