February: Ditch The Goals, Sustain The Habits

February is a funny month. It's got an extra letter, fewer days (yet a bonus day?!), and for some people it is January's rebound relationship. January gets all the big hopes, resolutions and plans. January gets the hype. But maybe things happened... maybe it didn't work out like you envisioned, so you head into February hoping this time will be better.

We get it. Which is why we are here to give you - and your February -  some extra love and support for the 29 days ahead. So whether January 2020 was filled with new habits and success that you want to build on, or you're needing that extra dose of encouragement to keep going, we've got you.

"I am not a “GOAL SETTER”.

“Wait how could this be?! You’re in the fitness industry that thrives off of goals. You have a business! How could you possibly not be a goal setter?!”


I’m just not. It’s not that I never have been, or that on occasion I won’t set a goal to finish something by a certain date, or remain consistent for a certain amount of time in some habit I’m trying to change.

But in the way that most people set measurable (usually numerical) goals - I just don’t.

I realized that this week when someone was asking about my 5 year plan for SP. The closest thing I could come up with was “to be more effective at what we are doing now”.

I’ve never had a “goal weight” with a date attached to it. Not even when I was postpartum last time.

I didn’t achieve the level of fitness I had when I was competing in CrossFit because I ever had specific measurable markers I was aiming for. I achieved it because I loved the process.

Contrary to popular belief - I don’t eat the way I eat, or train the way I train to look a certain way. It’s just the way I believe in living my best and most healthy life.

A goal is a temporary motivator. Oftentimes it’s fueled by what you’re “lacking” and comes from a place of “without this I’m not good enough.” Many times - it’s too small. Almost always you’re capable of much more - or would at least be much happier if you chased habit improvements and believed that showing up for your own life will take you to unimaginable places.

5 years ago - I had never heard of Julian Alcaraz. Good thing I wasn’t laser focused on some silly goal when he came along.

When we started SP the “goal” was 100 Members.

Where we are now didn’t come from projections. It came from passion.

Set intentions for WHO you want to be - not what you want to have, what you want to make, who you want to impress or how much you want to weigh." - @fearlessmiranda


TYPES OF "GOALS" WORTH SETTING

  • CONSISTENCY goals towards building new habits. This means the goal to move 4-5 days per week, even if it's more than nothing. Or making your water drinking, or eating 3 servings of veggies per day a goal. These goals (or resolutions) should really have NO END DATE - but at some point just stop being "goals" because they are a part of your daily life.

  • MINDSET goals. Things like - keeping a gratitude journal, meditation, or practicing positive self talk. (One of the best resources we have for this is listening to Coach Jeb and his weekly "Jeb in Flow" podcasts!)

  • Completion deadlines for life's necessary ills. Of course goals for tasks like "getting my taxes in on time" or "cleaning my house on Sundays" serve a purpose. Things that might not ever be fueled by much passion or belief - but definitely make your more important habits easier have their place in your systems and being the person you want to be! 


LITTLE HABITS = BIG WINS

There are over 3000 Street Parking members participating in the Choose Your Own Adventure Challenge where the focus is on building sustainable habits in nutrition, fitness and overall well being. Whether you are part of the CYOA Challenge or not, there are always little habit changes that can fuel sustainable habits and big wins any day, any time.

CELEBRATE NON SCALE VICTORIES (NSVs)! You are never going to hear us say that the scale defines your progress or success. Start looking for NON-Scale Victories when you are consistently working on improving health and fitness habits. 

  • How is your sleep? 

  • If you have skin conditions or recurring headaches, are they improving? 

  • Are you tracking your workouts? Are you able to use a heavier dumbbell than a month ago? With the retest workouts/the VAULT, did you see an improvement with your time?

On the bike... I didn’t look at time or calories, just my cadence. We believe CONSISTENCY is key to sustaining long term results, and that consistency comes from a mindset rooted in MORE THAN NOTHING. Often times perfectionism or only doing something under the ‘right’ conditions are the very things that sabotages your consistency!
